From working in investment firms and research shops, to performing due diligence in our spare time, we never came across a tool that would easily allow us to compare a stock from our portfolio or research report against a broader sub-segment of the market.

From high ticket service providers such as Refinitiv and CapIQ to various retail investor focused tools, we always had to manually export data into Excel and perform some spreadsheet wizardry there to manipulate bigger sets of data in order get a bigger picture on how a particular stock or set of stocks performed against the broader benchmark.

In a lot of cases we were limited only to several hundreds of stocks and a certain number of metrics due to Excel crashing. While we did automate a lot of our spreadsheets, the nature of the research almost always required some custom solutions.

Consequently, all of this resulted in us spending hours in the spreadsheets, and most importantly, it wasn’t uncommon that our insights and research were handicapped due to the limitations of third party service providers and Excel.
